I wrote most of the songs on ‘Rhode Island’ during a two year period where I was heavily involved with a non-profit organization, Blood:Water Mission. Blood:Water works with African communities in their efforts to gain access to clean water. I thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail to raise money for Blood:Water in 2005, went on tour with the band Jars of Clay (they started B:WM) as a representative speaking to people about the organization, and was planning a cross country bicycle ride called ‘The Ride:Well Tour‘ to raise money and awareness during this time.
These songs came out of my efforts to live a meaningful life in service to the people of Africa. In some ways I was right on target with what I hoped to do, but in a lot of ways I missed the boat on what it really means to enter into meaningful community. ‘Rhode Island’ is my vocalization of that process as it was happening. I hope you can find something in it that resonates with you and challenges you to think about what it means not just to serve others but to share your life with them. I have come to realize that in actuality these things are inseparable. Love, community and sacrifice are all part of the same cord. ‘Rhode Island’ was written inside of the questions that lead me to that conclusion.
You can find it on . . .
